Why Lodging Need Will Grow

As medical technology continues to advance and become more expensive, the trend toward centralization will likely intensify. New technologies like advanced gene therapy facilities and next-generation imaging systems will likely follow the same pattern of concentration in major medical centers, suggesting that demand for temporary patient lodging will continue to grow.

The cost of the latest medical devices can reach $200,000,000. Complex genetic testing laboratory equipment can easily cost $18,000,000.  Bio-printing equipment is coming and will be exorbitant.  These astronomical costs force healthcare systems to make strategic decisions about equipment placement, concentrating resources in regional “centers of excellence” where patients must travel significant distances to access the most advanced treatments available.

Specialization also contributes to patients having to travel.  There are at least ten different kinds of pediatricians, six kinds of OBGYNs, eight types of cardiologists, and nine different types of oncologists.  The chances of a highly specialized MD affiliating with a conveniently located community hospital are not very good.
