Building Support for Healthcare Legislation
Many people are working to advance this legislation, with most having personal experience with illnesses that require extended treatment. Cancer, for example, affects people across all walks of life and creates a shared mission among those who have faced it.
A Personal Story
Less than a year ago, one volunteer underwent medical procedures and 28 radiation treatments. During his treatment period, he witnessed the struggles of stressed families with sick children who had to make one way three-hour drives to Atlanta every day for weeks so their children could receive life-saving care.
Joyce’s Place: A Model of Community Support
This volunteer later discovered Joyce’s Place, run by a generous family who had rented three apartments across from the treatment center and funded by benevolent Georgians. They offered these apartments to families at minimal cost—sometimes completely free. Last year alone, 40 families found refuge in these apartments.
The treatment center’s director indicated they could refer 200 additional families to Joyce’s Place if space were available.
The Need for Tax Credit Support
Many charitable organizations like Joyce’s Place serve critically ill patients and need tax credits to expand their services. While we appreciate major corporate sponsors like Ronald McDonald House, we need broader business involvement. Until that happens, Georgia needs donor tax credits for smaller charities, which would clearly increase charitable giving and help more families in need.
